Canna Lilies are exotic tropicals that thrive in the hot summer months. Their flowers come in many bright, flashy colours – red, orange, yellow & pink. Most foliage comes in green, but there are many colours depending on the variety from variegated, bronze & maroon. Their leaves are wide and long, similar to banana leaves. Canna Liles have a wax coating to protect against fungal diseases. Dwarf Canna Lilies have a more compact growth habit and can grow up to 4-6 feet tall. In cold climates, Cannas are considered annuals that flower from spring until frost.

Growth

Spring, when the soil has been warmed, is the opportune time to plant Canna Lilies. Try to place them in a group for most impact when they bloom. They should be planted about a foot or two apart from one another. Canna Lilies like lots of heat, try to remember to plant them where they will get the most sunlight.

Plant Maintenance

Container-grown Canna Lilies will need to be watered once a day if outside, the soil needs to be kept moist. If the plant is starting to look ragged, you can cut the plant to the ground and it will recover quickly with some fertilizer and water. Feel free to prune away dying flower stalks. Pruning dead or faded flowers promotes new growth with more blooms. You can fertilize Canna Lilies monthly to allow them to grow and flower more. Canna Lilies can be brought indoors for winter and replanted outside in the spring. You can divide the plant if necessary.
