Hydrangeas are popular perennial shrubs, cultivated for their large, vibrant blooms. They are easy to cultivate and tolerate a variety of soil types. Their blooms range in colour from blue to pink, green, lavender and white
Some cultivars (not white) can change colour depending on soil pH. Acidic soils with a pH value below 5.5 can produce blue flowers, whereas more neutral soils with a pH greater than 6-6.5 can produce pink blooms. This change can take several weeks to complete, and it is generally easier to make the soil less acidic than vice versa. Due to this unique trait, it is not uncommon to see hydrangeas with multi-coloured blooms on the same plant.
Hydrangeas are not cold-tolerant and may need protection/insulation from the cold in climates with harsh winters. Potted hydrangeas should be overwintered indoors during their dormant period in an area that is cool but does not freeze (ie: a basement or garage).
If grown outside (ie: planted in a garden) mature Hydrangea shrubs can grow quite large and may live up to 50 years if well-cared for.
